Club members might be interested in following the journey of Abby Sunderland, a 16 year old California girl who is attempting to be the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe in a sailboat.  She started her journey on Sunday, Jan 24.  You can follow her at http://abbysunderland.com/ .  A good way to pass the winter's non sailing days!!!!

Temporarily aborted?

Looks like her attempt has hit a snafu: http://www.sail-world.com/Cruising/index.cfm?SEID=0&Nid=65986&SRCID=0&nt...

BTW is anyone else uncomfortable with this spectacle?

Abby's Journey

I think Sail-World's tone is a bit harsh regarding Abby's trip. The word "abort" does not exactly apply to what appears to be a prudent decision to improve her electrical generation capability. "Abort" according to Mr. Webster means to "terminate prematurely" which is not the case here. After a week at sea shakedown, this stop to repair her wind meters and add to her electrical capability seems warranted as it does not affect her quest other than some time taken to better prepare for the remainder of the voyage.

I also don't think that this unforseen stop meets the definition of the "Army" term "snafu" - Situation Now All "F*#ked Up. She might have run into a "snafu" had she continued without this unplanned stop.

This young girl has extreme courage and determination. I have been sailing for 40+ years and I survived a full gale on the North Atlantic one November (on a powered ship  -not a sailing vessel) along with some other "rough" times sailing on the ocean so I have great respect for both the sea and what she is tring to accomplish.

My 2 cents, Gil
