Special Presentation on Liberty Ships of World War II
And the Emergency Shipbuilding Program that Created Them
Mike Schneider, Chairman of the Board of Project Liberty Ship,
Discusses SS John W. Brown and America’s Liberty Ships
PHILADELPHIA, PA—The Philadelphia Sailing Club hosts a special presentation by Mike Schneider, Chairman of Project Liberty Ship, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the Liberty Ship SS John W. Brown as a living memorial to the men and women who built the great Liberty Fleet and the merchant seamen who manned them.
The presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, May 18, at The Cynwyd Club in Bala Cynwyd, beginning at 8:00 pm. The Cynwyd Club is located at 332 Trevor Lane, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004. The public is welcome, and admission is free.
Retired from the US Navy after 24 years of service, Mike Schneider has served as a volunteer with Project Liberty Ship since its founding in 1988 and as chairman for the last nine years. His presentation covers the remarkable history of the World War II Emergency Shipbuilding Program that resulted in the construction of 2,710 Liberty-class vessels as well as other cargo ships and tankers.
The restored Liberty Ship SS John W. Brown was acquired in 1988 by the Liberty Ship Project and berthed in Baltimore, where it is used to conduct several living history cruises each year. Manned by an all volunteer crew, the John W. Brown has sailed over 22,500 miles and visited some 30 US and Canadian ports since 1988.
