Nockamixon State Park - Does your GPS Work?

By CraigNSC - Posted on 18 October 2011

Do you own a GPS?  If yes, please post a reply.

How many members have GPS units.

So what does the park have to do with your GPS?  The park had a meeting last night, Oct 17th, on starting a PPFF group to help the park and needed projects or events.  PPFF is Pennsylvania Parks & Forests Foundation, a non-profit group.  Nockamixon is trying to start one.  Obie, Dave and Beth hosted a meeting to share how one could work at our park.  The park is always looking for ways to get projects completed like new trails, improvements, clean up, new events, etc.  The park just cut a ribbon on a bike trail.  Volunteers worked many hours preparing the trail.  The process took a few years but the trail was opened.  Obie shared last night his 3 or 4 page to do list.  One he has had on the list dates back to his first meeting - finding the park's corner pins.  Obie has been helped by the Boy Scouts on this project and Gail and I did a few the other year.  I had asked Obie if the DCNR had the 'waypoints' on file.  He has not been able to get the info, but I helped finish a task of using Google maps.

So......   If you have a GPS and a few hours and wish to walk the park, take a few compass points and find a boundary pin.  Think of it as a pirate map with a pot of gold to be found.  Maybe I should pin a few $2 bills to pins just to see who finds them.  The Excel workbook has the points from the north side all of the way around the east to the southern shore down to RT 313 and the Lake House Inn.  Pins are concrete posts with markings.  If you find one, paint it white (donate the paint).  Test a point from the workbook on Google Maps to see where they are on the map.

What better task than for a sailor to find their way.

So if you have a GPS and wish to try using it to find a difficult pin - try it.

The attached workbook is complete for now.  If you happen to do any searching for pins/ corners you need to confirm your finds.  Any with $2 bills, you are a winner.
