Sail and Learn: Rules of the Road
This week’s “Sail & Learn” is focused on the Rules of the Road. The Rules of the Road exist to minimize the Risk of Collision when you are underway. Please come to this presentation and learn whether you should stand on or give way when you are in a meeting, crossing, or overtaking situation with another boat on the lake. This is your chance to learn about the starboard tack rule, and whether the windward or leeward sailboat is stand on if both sailboats are on the same tack. Do you know who is stand on and give way when you confront a vessel under oars? Do you know who is give way when you confront a fishing vessel on the lake? If you would like to know the Rules of the Road please plan to attend this short presentation where we will review the Rules. This “Sail & Learn” will take place at the Environmental Education Center. Please see directions below.
My presentation on the Rules of the Road and discussion will take 15-20 minutes. After the Rules of the Road presentation, we will have a social gathering of our members in the Education Center. Please feel free to bring your own refreshments. People are also encouraged to bring a food item to share. This is an opportunity to meet up with your sail club friends. Some people may want to link up and sail either before or after the “Sail & Learn” event. One of the primary purposes of “Sail & Learn” events is to allow our members to meet up and get to know each other so if you like to hang around sailors, please join us.
To get to the Environmental Education Center, enter the park on Harrisburg School Rd. and go until it ends. Then turn right (away from the marina) and go about a quarter mile to parking lot 12. The Education Center is a short walk through the woods from parking lot 12. Proceed by foot along the path, past the bathrooms, until you get to the Education Center. The public is not allowed to drive up to the Education Center so it must be accessed from parking lot 12 by foot.
I hope to see many of you at the next “Sail & Learn” program on the Rules of the Road. If you have any questions please let me know.
Happy sailing.
