The Wind on Lake Nockamixon.

This is to announce that on Saturday, August 28 at 4:30 PM we will have our last “Sail & Learn” of the season.  This week’s topic is “The Wind on Lake Nockamixon”.  Although I am not a meteorologist, I have drawn many conclusions about the wind on Lake Nockamixon and I intend to share them in this final presentation of the season.  After all, what could be more important than understanding the wind to a sailor.  During this presentation I will give you my opinion not based on science by based on my own observations.  I intend to cover the following topics:

What are the three major sources of wind on Lake Nockamixon and how to take advantage of them?

How to find wind on the lake by looking for Cat’s paws?

What is a sea breeze and land breeze and their impact on the wind on the lake?

What is the effect of geographic influences like Heacock Mountain and lower elevations near the dam on the Lake’s wind?

What is wind tunneling and wind trenching and how do they affect wind on the lake?

What causes gusts on the Lake?

How to escape strong winds beyond your comfort level on the Lake?

What causes wind shifts on the lake and when are they likely to happen and their direction?

If you want to learn more about the wind on Lake Nockamixon and don’t mind listening to one man’s opinion based on his own observations, please plan to attend my epistle on the wind.  Hopefully I will not just be full of hot air.

This Sail & Learn will take place in the trailer parking lot.  Please bring a chair and whatever you want to drink and finger foods to share.  I look forward to see you all there for this last Sail & Learn of the season.

Happy sailing,

Mike Brown

This will be our “last” Sail & Learn Class this Saturday at 4:30pm (August 28) for the season (located in the marina parking lot). This Saturday’s topic is on the “Winds at ”, which should be interesting to hear the theories and facts of why our lake is both fun and challenging to sail. I am personally looking forward to listening to Mike Brown's presentation and the many “wind” discussions from our “season” club sailors.

I thought that we could make our last Sail & Learn class “fun” by having a picnic dinner after our class; we could share our favorite funniest or scariest lake wind stories!!  A little picnic party after our class would be a nice way of showing our appreciation to our head instructor Mike Brown and our other Sail & Learn instructors, Dan Reasoner, Craig Tourtellott and Dave Stadler. I will bring a tray of associated finger hoagies (45 pieces = 15 hoagies cut into thirds) and pickles from the to share.  Feel free to add to our Sail & Learn picnic by bringing your favorite summer salad, chips, cheese/crackers, summer fruit, or a dessert to share.  FYI…don’t forget to bring your “favorite” beverage and a comfortable lawn chair!

See everyone at the lake on Saturday!
