Winterizing

When you take your boat home for the winter how do you store it and why? Do you dismantle it and store its parts separately?
Last year I removed most of the parts from my Scot since several pieced needed work. I found other parts which unexpectedly needed work as well.
What do you usually do?
Glenn, FS 3834
Agree Glenn, take most apart for many reasons. The Santana 2023R is removed from the trailer, centerboard dropped into normal position to clean off the summer slime, cabin stuff removed and stored in the basement.
Mast is stripped of stays, keeps the wire from being exposed to winter freezes and thaws. Mast is actually used in the basement to set sails to make adjustments to seams, etc. Mast and boom is set in basement area (like a boat on its side). Hoist sails using the mast/boom to set leech and luff tension.
Motor is taken to basement to avoid freezing again. Run WD 40 into carb and pistons.
Lines are coiled and stored in a laundry bag to dry out. Boat is covered with plastic wrap to minimize winter dirt and snow (boat is under roof to minimize snow). Plastic wrap is what is used to wrap boxes fro shipment. Does not shrink, just a wrap, but it does fit tight.
This fall and winter we will be repairing some summer FRP work. In the spring the boat gets sanded and painted, if needed.
Do not forget the usual rubbing, waxing and polishing of the sides and topsides.
