Flying Scot Fleet Report 2006
Start Line.
2006 was another record-setting year for Fleet # 163 at Lake Nockamixon. Record Membership, Record Participation in Fleet Racing, in the "Challenge of the Lakes," and at all of the NSC Social Events. Thanks to all of you for participating this past year, and for making the Flying Scot Fleet such a great competitive and fun experience for all of us to enjoy. There is no substitute for "one-design" sailing, and the more boats we have sailing, the more fun it becomes. The Fleet is now, by far, the largest one-design Fleet in the Club and we still have many potential Racers and Cruisers who are members of the Fleet, and sail at the Lake, but have not yet joined the Club. Come join us in 2007!!
Let's plan to break all records again in 2007 -- the first 3 racers to re-register with NSC for 2007 were all Flying Scot sailors!!! Why not target double figures for every race day?? Why not 20 boats in the "C-of-L"?? Why not at least 6 boats every Wednesday?? Why not 6 or more on every Cruising Sunday?? It's all up to you -- if you truly enjoy sailing your Scot, come out and really enjoy sailing with your friends in the Fleet.
Flying Scot Fleet # 163 Season Summary, 2006.
Flying Scot Fleet # 163 had another great year of Racing, Cruising, and Traveling activities in 2006. 20 Scots participated in NSC racing -- and set a new record with 11 boats competing on a single day. The 4th Annual “Challenge of the Lakes” Series was the best ever -- with 16 boats competing. 7 Scots participated in the Wednesday Night Sailing at Nockamixon, and Scot sailors were always in the majority at NSC social functions!! The 3 newest Scot owners, Art Hart, in # 4961, now named "Great Scot," Greg and Judy Morrison, in their new boat # 5685, "Knot Workin," and Rob and Lois Wilkinson, in # 4516, have proved to be the most enthusiastic sailors, and the most frequent competitors, during 2006. Another good omen for the future of Scots at Nockamixon.
The Scot racing skippers in 2006 were: George Balas, Phil Berger, Wayne Cagno, Matt Cohen, Ben Craig, Jim Doherty, Chet Ensign, Len Evelev, Bob Gordon, Mark Kaplan, Will Mathias, John Mangan, Greg Morrison, Gary Nackman, Mike Noone, Jim Rittenburg, Phil Scheetz, Gordon Sell, Bert VanAnglen, and Rob Wilkinson.
Active Scot Cruisers in 2006 were: Frank and Andrea Barbehenn, Bob Gordon, Jim Hanly, Art Hart, Tom Lacey, Walter Hutt and Family, and Dave & Jamie Stadler -- and many of the above "racers" also took the time to relax and enjoy the Lake in "cruising" mode with their families. The record number of sailors in a single boat was at more than 6 this year with competition between the Cagno, Morrison, Rittenburg, Morrison, and Wilkinson Families for the "most in the boat" honors!! The "Blue Angels" Cruise to Annapolis in May was the highlight of the Cruising calendar and was featured in a separate report.
Ten different Scot skippers won races this year. Race Winners were: George Balas, Matt Cohen, Jim Doherty, Chet Ensign, Len Evelev, Will Mathias, Greg Morrison, Mike Noone, Phil Scheetz, and Gordon Sell. The “one-design” character of the boat was clearly evident as the newest boat in the Fleet, Greg Morrison’s # 5685, "Knot Workin," was often battling for the line with the oldest boat in the Fleet, Matt Cohen’s # 520. In fact, when Matt fell off the boat in a very windy "C-of-L" race -- with Laurie crewing for him for the first time in a race (!!!) -- it was Greg who retrieved Matt's shoe from the water and presented it to him during the Awards afterwards.
12 Scots competed in the “Saturday Series,” 12 Scots (not the same group!) competed in the “Sunday Series,” and 10 competed in the “Regatta Series.” This year a record 16 Scots competed in the “Challenge of the Lakes” Series. Also, 7 Scots sailed in the NSC Wednesday Night Sailing – and Scot sailors seemed to be always in the majority at the Country Place social sessions!!! Also, 12 Scots competed for the NSC "Champions Cup" in 2006 -- half of the 24 boats competing.
The Nockamixon Scot Fleet was the narrow winner in the 2006 “Challenge of the Lakes” Series with 1st Noone, 3rd Scheetz, and 5th Balas, from NSC, and 2nd Ensign, 4th, Sell, and 6th, Kaplan, from HSC. This competition was great in 2006, and promises to be even “hotter” in 2007. Perhaps we can include a visit to the new Scot Fleet in Stone Harbor??
Scot Fleet # 163 was represented at the FSSA Midwinters Championships, the “Wife-Husband” Championships, the National Championships, and the New York Districts Championships in 2006. A new record for Fleet # 163 representation in National events!!
2006 Racing Awards: Bert VanAnglen, our long-serving, and enthusiastic Fleet Captain, presented Awards at the NSC Banquet for the 2006 racing program to the following Flying Scot sailors:
The Flying Scot Fleet # 163 “Sterling” Trophy.
The Scot Fleet “Sterling” Trophy -- presented to the Fleet by George and Linda Balas -- was made by George and includes a “Sterling” hubcap from one of the original Scot trailers with a Title signed by Gordon Douglass himself!! The intent of this trophy is to stimulate travel by Fleet members and to promote the Fleet at distant regattas.
The winners for 2006 were (again!) Mike and Brenda Noone who traveled to St Petersburg for the Scot Midwinters Championships and finished 12th in the Challenger Division, and to the National Championships in Marblehead that ended with the infamous Tornado storm!! Other events that qualified for the trophy were the “Wife-Husband” National Regatta where they finished 2nd in the Challenger Division, and won the “Century” award for the highest finishers with combined age over 100 (well over!!), and to the New York Districts, on Long Island Sound.
This spectacular trophy must surely stimulate more Fleet travel in the 2007 when the Nationals and the Wife Husbands will be within easy driving distance!! We should easily set a new Fleet record for attendance at the NAC's in Deltaville in July 2007, and we may even exceed the "4" at the Wife-Husbands on Long Island Sound in August??
Thanks to all of you for your participation and support of the Fleet in 2006.
Have a GREAT HOLIDAY SEASON -- and may you get lot's of new sailing goodies to help you prepare for the 2007 Sailing Season.
Mike Noone, Secretary, Flying Scot Fleet # 163.
